Conservation of energy

The principle of the conservation of energy is encapsulated within the First Law of Thermodynamics, which states that, in a non-nuclear process, energy cannot be created or destroyed.

We may also say that when a system undergoes a thermodynamic process, the net heat supplied is equal to the net work done. This law is based on the work of Joule, who found by experiment a “mechanical equivalent of heat”.
