External shading

This is the best way of excluding the entry of direct solar radiation. If the shade is completely opaque, all the direct radiation is prevented from entering the window, although scattered radiation from the ground and the sky can still do so and must be taken into account. If the shade is partially opaque then some of the direct radiation is transmitted. The practical difficulty with motorised, external shading is that adequate access must be provided for maintenance.
